XL Middleton at Quail State

MoFunk label guru, owner at Salt Box Records, and all-around great dude XL Middleton is on deck for our Selector Series. Help us welcome one of our Cali favorites to Programme for his first show in Fresno.

Based out of Pasadena, producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Hudgins began work as XL Middleton in the early 2000s leaning heavily on the influence of West Coast funk and hip-hop. In 2013 he launched the MoFunk label with friend Eddy Funkster, first issuing limited-edition 45s and later releasing his 2015 album, Tap Water. After making serious noise in the modern funk world and beyond, XL returned to the G-funk sound that marked his earlier career with the full-length, 2 Minutes Till Midnight. Recent work also includes production on Soul Clap’s full-length 2021 album World Transformation Force. Matthew owns and operates Salt Box Records, situated in the heart of LA's Chinatown. It stocks an array of records sourced from a vast range of cities. The collection continually grows, with XL often bringing back "boxes upon boxes” of records for the shop each time after touring in Europe, Japan, or Canada. As a lover of 90s G-funk and modern funk, XL Middleton's shop stocks some of his favorite records that speak to the genre.
